"Madam President, two weeks ago in my constituency of Northern Ireland, 900 employees of JTI Ballymena were told that they were to lose their jobs. Make no mistakes about it: these redundancies are the direct result of the revised Tobacco Products Directive. The backdoor deals thrashed out around minimum pouch weights and pack sizes were illogical and deeply damaging. I warned Parliament that jobs would be lost and, sadly, too many ignored this or simply did not care.
It would be perverse, therefore, for EU regional development funds to be used to attract these jobs to Eastern European economies. UK taxpayers already pay more into Europe than they get back out. They should not have to stand by while their own money is used to rob them of employment. These institutions, Madam President, must be in a state of readiness to help and aid the workers from JTI Ballymena."@en1
