"Madam President, this initiative’s purported objectives are to apprehend illegal migrants, gather intelligence and combat the organised crime gangs that trade in people. That is all very well, but migrants stream in from Africa, the Middle East and beyond for a variety of reasons: poverty, oppression and most lately the result of some Islamic countries descending into a form of fundamentalist barbarism. These varied causes need a concerted and coherent foreign policy response by the countries of NATO and the West if we are to do anything to alleviate them.
One of the main reasons that migrants flood to Europe from all corners of the world is the EU’s open borders policy, because once in one European country it is easy for them to make their way to their European country of choice, and in many cases the migrants’ country of choice is the United Kingdom. We only have to look at the chaos and anarchy in Calais where thousands of illegal immigrants daily fight to gain entry to Britain after having travelled across Europe to do so.
We need genuine cooperation among nation states to address the root causes of mass migration and to police our borders, but while we still have an open borders policy in Europe these efforts will be in vain. Britain’s priority should be to regain control of our borders by leaving the European Union."@en1
