"Mr President, I had the privilege to be elected as the new President of the EU-Iraq delegation last week. I made it very clear that our priority must be to destroy ISIL in Iraq and Syria and wherever ISIL resides, including on our own streets in Europe. Mosul has just held the last Christian mass after 1 600 years. Even babies are being beheaded and 1.8 million people are internally displaced in Iraq. I strongly support US, British, NATO and Arab nations’ air strikes against ISIL, but we are facing the equivalent of a core of 30 000 ISIL troops. It cannot be done overnight.
I had the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkey two weeks ago, with whom I directly raised concerns about Kobane. Turkey’s very positive announcement to allow Iraqi Kurdish fighters across its border into Kobane, particularly with their sensitivities about the PKK, is most welcome.
We should support the Kurdistan Regional Government but not get too close to the Iranian regime. In this regard we should say that the enemy of your enemy is not necessarily your friend. I intend to play a constructive role to ensure that all tools – military, political, economic and humanitarian – are used to destroy ISIL and to protect minorities from these purveyors of evil."@en1
