"Mr President, my thoughts and prayers go out to the brave and innocent people of Kobane, who continue to suffer at the hands of Islamic State. They have now been under siege for over a month, and the situation continues to look desperate. There was some calm over the past few days as brave Kurdish forces appeared to be successfully pushing these murderous barbarians back, but – as we speak – IS have renewed their assault. Turkey, an official EU candidate country, stood shamefully by and callously watched the horror in Kobane for too long, even though it could have intervened. David Cameron’s Conservative Party is politically allied to the governing Turkish AKP, whose officials have previously found a voice to claim that women should not laugh in public. And as the world has now seen, they have remained deathly silent for too long, watching Kurds fight not just for their lives but also for the very existence of their culture. This refusal to act swiftly raises serious questions over their status as potential EU members and, indeed, over British support for Turkish membership. How can the Conservative Party seriously support people who act in such a manner? IS may be fighting for Kobane now, but we know that they will not stop there. They will continue to slaughter innocent people who do not accept their twisted interpretation of Islam until they are stopped. I fear that it is only a matter of time before some of the EU citizens who have been perverted by this warped mindset return to commit atrocities on our streets. I can think of no better reason to stop the free movement of people across the EU than the wish to ensure that citizens from all 28 Member States are protected from these poor examples of so-called humanity."@en1
