"Overall I could not support this resolution as it is not the time for a rise in the EU budget. Many areas need reform and the EU should do more of what it is good at, investing in research, in SMEs and creating real jobs and real growth.
What my Labour colleagues and I voted for is to work collectively to deliver real benefits, such as developments in technology. We voted for investment and for growth and voted for regional funding that goes directly to communities that are best able to determine how to deliver for people locally.
We also voted for the EU to fulfil the global demands that national governments have put on it – whether in Ukraine, Gaza or on Ebola.
These are areas where we are more than the sum of our parts, where the EU makes a real difference, and I am proud that Labour MEPs have stood up for our constituents in these areas.
I also voted against amendments to subsidise bullfighting and to subsidise the tobacco industry, which I do not feel are an appropriate use of EU funds (Amendments 232 and 231)."@en1
