"Madam President, I feel that there are several aspects that must represent the core of this Parliament’s response to the current situation in this region. Firstly, we need to stand behind Israel’s sovereign right to defend its borders and people from terrorism, but we are also mindful of the immense suffering hard-felt by the people of Gaza as a direct result of this operation and we need to act to help.
Secondly, we must recognise the impact that Operation Protective Edge is having on the safety of Jewish communities across the EU. In the United Kingdom alone there were approximately 240 reports of anti-Semitic incidents in July as the fighting escalated. These types of hate crimes are completely unacceptable and as MEPs and as a Parliament it is absolutely vital that we send a message across Europe that religious tolerance has never been more important."@en1
