"Madam President, I join other Members in recognising that Bangladesh has made incredible progress on the Millennium Development Goals, and also in recognising that the devastating impact of the recent floods in the country is simply one demonstration of how Bangladesh is so vulnerable – the most vulnerable country in the world – to the impact of climate change. But today we emphasise that it must make progress on human rights and democracy too. We express deep concern about the new media law restricting criticism of the government, the proposed NGO law and allegations of widespread abuses by the security forces, although the recent commuting of sentence of the Islamist leader in the Supreme Court could help set a new precedent about the absolutely unacceptable use of the death penalty. Finally, following the Rana Plaza tragedy, the new labour law has not yet led to the necessary progress towards the formation of trade unions in the country. While we should absolutely welcome Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Next taking responsibility through the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, we should absolutely condemn Gap and Asda-Walmart for failing to do so."@en1
