"Madam President, it seems that some of our colleagues are determined to write a suicide note for European economies. Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said that Europe cannot afford a unilateral climate policy. Former Industry Commissioner Antonio Tajani said that we are creating an industrial massacre in Europe with energy prices. They were right. We should listen to them.
Our energy prices are driving industry, jobs and investment out of the EU altogether, often to jurisdictions with lower environmental standards. We are damaging our economies and arguably increasing global emissions at the same time. Major economies around the world will not agree to swingeing emission cuts. We cannot lead if nobody follows. Our first priority in Lima must be to ensure that the EU is no longer disadvantaged in terms of energy prices compared with our major competitors.
There are 1200 new coal-fired power stations in the global pipe line. Emissions will rise whatever we do. Let us not ruin our economy in a futile attempt to halt the inevitable."@en1
