"I very much welcome the principles that underlie this Association Agreement – namely support for the rule of law and the protection of Ukrainian sovereignty.
And upon these principles it is right that the EU engages with Ukraine to support its political reforms, to encourage free trade, and to cooperate on matters of security and defence that are currently very salient given the context of actions by Russia in the east of the country.
Indeed, at a time when the Russian import ban continues to have ramifications for the dairy sector in my constituency, Northern Ireland, I also share the view that continued political discussions are vital in seeking de-escalation in tensions between the two countries.
We must accept, however, that the first step in this process must be the withdrawal of Russian forces and resources from separatist militants – to establish a secure border and international monitoring."@en1
