"Mr President, an EU and Irish citizen, 17-year-old Ibrahim Halawa, was arrested in August 2013 amongst clashes between pro- and anti-Morsi supporters while on holiday in Egypt. One year on, he is still languishing in an Egyptian jail with no charges brought against him. No book of evidence has been submitted and Ibrahim has had to endure horrific conditions including physical abuse. Both Amnesty International and the human rights organisation Reprieve have investigated Ibrahim’s case and have found no justification for his incarceration. On 12 August Ibrahim’s case was due to be heard as part of the notorious mass trials which take place without legal representation. Due to the hundreds of defendants presented before the judge in one go, he walked out in protest, leaving a teenager jailed without charge, unable to finish his final exams at school and progress to further education with his friends. So I am calling on the EU to explicitly request his release and I will be seeking a meeting with the new High Representative as soon as possible to ensure that everything that can be done at an EU level is being done."@en1
