"Mr President, on 16 August 2014, 35 migrants crammed themselves into containers and docked themselves at Tilbury in my constituency. Sadly one died and, as tragic as this episode is, they have since tried to claim asylum. I think it would be wrong, and here is why. We are already known across Europe as ‘soft-touch Britain’, and this would only add to the United Kingdom being a soft touch. If we give asylum here, many more will put themselves in harm’s way in containers to come to the United Kingdom. We have proper processes in place to claim asylum in the UK and to migrate to the UK, and this is unfair to the wider community and to genuine migrants and asylum seekers. Next May, the British people and my constituents will be able to judge soft-touch Britain. They will be able to vote for UKIP, a party that rejects this Union and that will get our borders and our country back."@en1
