"Mr President, Europe needs to focus more of its resources on advanced manufacturing and engineering. Making things has become terribly unfashionable but it is actually what we are good at in this part of the world. By ‘this part of the world’ I mean Europe and particularly my constituency of the West Midlands. Firms like Jaguar Land Rover, Hadley Industries and East End Foods are exporting all over the world and creating thousands of jobs as they do so, but they are desperate to fill those jobs with more and better science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) graduates. We have got to be more active on skills if we are serious about growth. That is why the European Semester and the Youth Guarantee must prioritise training whatever the other pressures. Our young people need sustainable, quality jobs and we need to give them the tools."@en1
