"Conservative MEPs fully support initiatives designed to help young people, whatever their circumstances, enter the labour market. The ECR resolution highlighted unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, as the biggest social challenge facing Europe. Conservative MEPs believe that at the national level, it is essential to give education and training systems greater relevance to labour market needs.
Blanket EU laws or initiatives are impractical and inefficient. Actions to tackle youth unemployment are better if they are delivered by national governments. We cannot support calls for new legally binding instruments at EU level, which add little or no value in terms of getting young people into employment. It is not the role of the European Parliament to instruct Member States on how to organise their social security systems.
While we understand the potential for migration to help some young people find work, and while we support the principle of free movement of workers in the EU – this must be qualified. Free movement should be about work, where individuals can follow opportunities and contribute to the host economy rather than moving to take advantage of welfare regimes in other Member States. For these reasons we cannot support the Joint Motion for Resolution."@en1
