"Madam President, I gave a cautious welcome to the intervention that ended the disastrous Morsi government, which had tried to turn Egypt into a one-party state under Sharia law and had brought the economy to its knees.
I also gave a cautious welcome to the election of President al-Sisi. But, as a friend of Egypt and a long-standing defender of the large Coptic Christian community which was persecuted under Morsi, I still strongly condemn the harsh and unjust sentences now handed down to the Al Jazeera journalists including my own London constituent Sue Turton.
I call again on President al-Sisi to exercise clemency and cancel her unjust 10-year jail sentence, which will make it impossible for her to work as a journalist in any African Union country. So, Mr al-Sisi, please listen to our appeal."@en1
