"Madam President, just like my colleague, Seán Kelly, I would like to raise the issue of the continuing imprisonment of the 18 year-old Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa. Indeed his trial, due to be held yesterday, was postponed. Caught up with his three sisters in a disturbance in a mosque last August on a visit to Cairo, he has been detained without trial since. And by detaining Ibrahim Halawa the Egyptian authorities totally contravene the terms of the EU-Egypt Association Agreement of last June.
This Agreement states that respect for human rights and democratic principles constitutes an essential element of the Agreement and in this context his detention without trial and for a prolonged period clearly violates the terms of this Agreement.
The fact that Ibrahim’s three sisters, who were arrested with him, were released following representations from the Irish Government clearly indicates they were not engaged in any activity that could justify his detention. I am therefore calling on the High Representative and the Commission to demand the release of Ibrahim, and indeed other journalists who have been detained without trial, and for the cessation of the mass trials.
In these trials the rights of the individuals are ignored in a process which has no basis in human rights or acceptable judicial procedure."@en1
