"Madam President, Israel is a democratic state respectful of the rule of law, and of course it wants peace. But it cannot be subject to unremitting rocket attacks on its civilian areas without defending itself and its civilian population, and the right to retaliate militarily against Hamas and Islamic Jihad is its right under international law in Gaza – and it is they who are responsible for this tragedy. Ms Auken, this is compounded by their habit – a war crime – of using innocent Palestinian civilians as human shields and hiding their weapons in mosques and schools. Israel does everything humanly possible to minimise civilian casualties; in contrast, Hamas has a total disregard for human life. Even the Palestinian Authority’s President Abbas has stated as much. Now, the cruel rejection by Hamas of the Egyptian ceasefire is not only a tragedy for the Gaza civilian population, who are already undergoing a humanitarian crisis, but it is also militarily suicidal for Hamas, which, as we must remember in this House, is a terrorist organisation banned by the EU."@en1
