"Mr President, recent Pew Research Centre work on public opinion on TTIP shows that while people on both sides of the Atlantic do not yet fully oppose the trade deals, they generally do not expect to get more jobs, higher wages or lower prices out of them. That being the case, Commissioner De Gucht, what should you be doing to convince them that they will actually benefit from TTIP?
It feels like we have forgotten our history. Working people in my home country only supported and continue to support the European Union’s internal market because it comes attached to a social model, and public services are a key pillar of that social model. Last week the EU chief negotiator wrote to allay the UK public’s fear about the use of TTIP to lock in the current UK Government’s back-door privatisation of our National Health Service. Now we are not naive in the Labour Party or in the UK, we know that the biggest threat to our NHS is the Tories and not TTIP, but the British people do not want to see a narrow exemption only for it to become subject to privatisation creep in the years to come. What more can you do to reassure public sector users and workers that TTIP will prevent further privatisation or liberalisation of our public services? Since ‘trust me’ has not worked so far, will you commit to a public consultation on how we can protect our public services?"@en1
