"The situation in Ukraine is already a grave crisis, and there are no easy answers, nor should we in the EU seek to take sides. Our values are clear: democracy, rule of law and human rights and respect for diversity. It is clear that all sides in Ukraine have fallen short of late, but that should not compromise our values nor our need to act to defend them when war threatens our closest borders. It is quite clear that Russia has broken international law in annexing Crimea, and Russian-inspired unrest is destabilising the rest of an already unstable country. This can only degrade further unless the international community acts. While sanctions are a welcome start, these must be escalated to give the Geneva talks an added urgency."@en1
