"It is vital that as a Parliament, we do all in our power to support those small and medium-sized enterprises that are seeking to invest in research and development activities. And as such, I support the focus of this report. In my own constituency, Northern Ireland, business expenditure on research and development in 2012 was the highest on record. And much of this has been down to the work of my colleagues in the Department of Enterprise, who have invested in measures supporting access to finance for SMEs. The Committeeʼs report rightly emphasises the need to reduce bureaucracy and red tape for SMEs applying to EU-funded research programmes. It also proposes to increase the level of funds that can be used to cover administrative and project evaluation costs. This support is crucial in allowing smaller enterprises the opportunity to invest in research, apply the knowledge, and thus bring forward new and improved products and services. I also support the overall aim of allowing different Member States to come together to support these activities in a coordinated manner. Such innovation is key to our economic recovery."@en1
