"Madam President, I should like to thank colleagues Gunnar Hökmark, Marianne Thyssen, Corien Wortman-Kool and others across the political divide for this excellent work today. Commissioner, you used the word that this was a ‘violent’ crisis. And violent is how it was in terms of its impact on families, on society, on politics right across the European Union. Let me explain, lest we forget the figures. In the Irish context – and remember, our taxpayers took the hit, which we said from now on will not happen in the future – the amount was EUR 64 billion. The agreement which the leaders reached in June 2012 to break the link between the banks and sovereign, and to address the legacy debt for Ireland, needs to be honoured. I am pleased about your work, Commissioner, and you talked of ethics and morality. It is not the first time and I thank you for using those words in this Chamber about the banking sector. Good luck to all to those who do not run in the future, and to those who do."@en1
