"At a time when families and households across my own constituency face hard economic times, I find it disheartening that this Report condemns the level of resources allocated to the EU’s policy on external action. While it is right and just that we assist those living amidst danger and disadvantage in societies outside of Europe’s borders, we must also not forget how much the EU’s unnecessary foreign policy costs each of us every year. The External Action Service has a staff of over 3[nbsp ]500 people. It costs taxpayers in countries across EU, and in my constituency Northern Ireland, half a billion euro every year. Such waste cannot be justified.
Of course it is vital that we build good relationships with our neighbours – especially in order to eradicate poverty and cut the roots of extremist terrorism in developing countries. However this a role that strikes to the very core of national sovereignty. It should be for Member States to have their own foreign policy. I also note with concern the absence of an approach to tackle worldwide persecution against Christians within the content of this Report. These injustices are becoming more prevalent and we must ensure a robust approach to protecting these religious minorities."@en1
