"Madam President, the security threats posed to Europe and the wider Western world are more complex and multifaceted than ever. Whether one looks to the fight against terrorism, counteracting cyber warfare or reacting to emerging security and humanitarian crises globally, all of these are areas where the single Member State today cannot always act effectively unilaterally. The culture now of cooperation, fostered by the CFSP and CSDP, therefore allows us to protect our mutual interests and act with greater force and efficacy. Those who argue that this is a threat to national sovereignty in my country ignore the reality that this actually is by consensus and unanimity. There is still a veto for individual Member States. Following the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty, we have witnessed some successes for the CFSP that have been taking place over the last five years. I would particularly like to pay a tribute to Baroness Ashton for her record. We must note, for instance, the examples of the successes in anti-piracy operations of EU[nbsp ]NAVFOR Operation Atalanta and the breakthrough in negotiations with Iran, as well as the Pristina-Belgrade dialogues, which will all be remembered as Cathy Ashton’s legacy."@en1
