"Mr President, from the beginning the inclusion of aviation in the European system was ill-conceived and it was a stupid idea. It was nothing more than a tax on industry – an industry that supports over five million jobs across Europe – and also it would not save a single ounce of CO . Some of our largest trading partners have quite rightly shown their determination not to be ruled by the European Union and this has put large aircraft orders amounting to billions of dollars in jeopardy, threatening much-needed investment and jobs. One mitigates environmental impact by advances in technology, implementing the Single European Sky and building capacity. While some in this House may feel that EU legislation must not be dictated to by third countries, they should remember that we are global traders and we are not actually global dictators. We must work with international partners constructively. In conclusion, we will support the position tomorrow – under duress I have to say – because the original regulation is even worse. My message to the Commission is this: Commission, you came across as arrogant. We have no confidence in you. Your approach was naive and it was patronising. Next time you come up with another stupid idea we think you should think about it a bit more thoughtfully – and about the impact – before you actually come to this House."@en1
