"Mr President, one of the fundamental stores of wealth in the world, of course, is property. Often we see that people who have a piece of land to call their own are far better able to build sustainable livelihoods than those permanently beholden to often unscrupulous landlords. Nowhere is this more important and apparent than in parts of the developing world, where ordinary people have been effectively disenfranchised by the exploitative actions of those who have sought to control their land and resources – sometimes unfairly – or been rendered dependent on the often well-intentioned but frequently disempowering networks of developmental aid from the EU and other donors. I am, therefore, very happy to endorse my Conservative colleague Nirj Deva’s report on the role of property and wealth creation in eradicating poverty and fostering good development. We must focus more attention on the surveying, registration and management of land and the formalisation of property rights everywhere around the globe, in order to facilitate more secure business networks and, ultimately, lasting prosperity, unshackled from the ambivalent structures of international aid."@en1
