"It was necessary to update the Radio Equipment Directive to reflect modern issues in this area. I backed provisions providing national authorities with additional abilities to ascertain whether radio products comply with new safety rules. This information will allow the creation of a European database similar to that which exists in the United States on radio equipment which must be registered before being put on the market. Other provisions which will lead to a more efficient use of the radio spectrum include rules that radio receivers must achieve a minimum level of performance and that devices must not interfere with each other. I believe that one of the most important proposals which my colleagues and I approved relates to the development of a common charger for mobile phones. Not only will this help the environment and reduce costs by reducing waste, but the new rules we approved will get rid of the unnecessary and frustrating inconvenience consumers are faced with through the incompatibility of mobile phone chargers."@en1
