"Mr President, there is much that is worthy in this resolution, but there are also many omissions, as we have heard, in terms of the thematic issues. What about the victims of terrorism around the world? What about the Christian communities subjected to so much violence and abuse around the world? What about the continuing African slave trade? So why do we keep picking on countries like Sri Lanka, as my colleague, Mr Deva, has already mentioned? There is a country that finally had the courage to deal with the terrorists which cost thousands of lives and almost brought the country to ruin. The government, it seems, has not been forgiven for its success; for ending the terrorist occupation of the north of Sri Lanka; for resettling 300[nbsp ]000 IDPs; for the construction of bridges, roads and schools; for re-establishing the rule of law in the north of the country; for its own process of accountability and reconciliation and for kick-starting the economy. I do not think for a moment that the government of Sri Lanka has got everything right. Why not invite a distinguished outside judge to join the oversight of human rights investigation? This Parliament should not continue to be the spokesman of political interest with a very distorted agenda."@en1
