"Mr President, the Sri Lankans are perfectly capable of defending their own country and their own democracy. Sri Lanka became a universal-franchise democratic state in 1931, a long time before 19 of the 28 EU Member States. It is laughable for the EU to lecture Sri Lanka on good governance. Since 1948, it has peacefully changed governments and presidents over 15 times, even during a bloody 28-year terrorist war. The EU resolution calls for an international mechanism to establish the truth. What nonsense! This imperial mindset must stop. Otherwise we will be ignored, as Putin is now doing.
Sri Lanka has set up its own high-level commissions. One has court-martialled 430 soldiers; another has spent EUR[nbsp ]3 billion on reconstruction; another has investigated 16[nbsp ]000 complaints on disappearances; another has de-mined 90[nbsp ]% of the land; another has settled 24[nbsp ]000 land disputes, and another has intervened regarding all the 7[nbsp ]800 casualties. Amazingly, free elections have been held, and the results were that 90[nbsp ]% of those elected were supporters of the LTTE. How stupid can that be in a real democracy?"@en1
