"I voted in favour of this report as it supports a policy framework aimed at increasing consumer choice while at the same time protecting both rights holders and consumers. I was pleased that many of my amendments were adopted in the final report. For example my call for standards for ensuring interoperability of connected TVs to be developed by industry in order not to stifle innovation. Further I am also pleased that the report now expressly encourages the creation of apps, even though I think the final report is still far too negative regarding ‘appisation’, given that this is a flourishing market. I am glad that consumer protection is highlighted, especially with regard to the need to protect our youth. Lastly, as one of my amendments stressed, I regret that there are still too many areas in Europe without high-speed broadband as they cannot take advantage of the opportunities offered by the new digital age. This is also the case for many people in my constituency, the East Midlands. And I would like to remind the Commission that it is vital for consumers to have access to high-speed internet in order to unlock the potential of a converged audiovisual world."@en1
