"I voted in favour of this report, which was drafted by my Labour colleague, Claude Moraes and looks at the revelations of mass surveillance of EU citizens' communications by the US and some Member State governments. The Parliament held an inquiry into the allegations, which looked at the legality, proportionality and involvement of Member States in the surveillance. In light of the inquiry's findings, this report calls for the suspension of two key EU-US data-sharing agreements, the development of an EU 'cloud' to reduce dependency of EU citizens on the US cloud and for EU action to protect whistle-blowers and press freedom. In addition, data protection should not be included in the EU-US Trade Agreement and a separate EU-US data protection framework agreement should be adopted as soon as possible. The report also calls on the European Council to finally begin work on the proposed Data Protection package, with the aim of beginning negotiations with the Parliament and reaching an agreement by the end of 2014. Law-abiding citizens rightly expect their privacy to be respected when communicating and sharing data online and we should do everything we can to uphold this fundamental right."@en1
