"I support Parliament’s resolution on the outcome of our inquiry into mass surveillance by the USA NSA and by some Member States’ intelligence services. Parliament is absolutely correct to condemn these mass surveillance programmes as a breach of fundamental rights, and to call on EU leaders to suspend and reform existing EU-US agreements including the Swift bank data transfer agreement and the Safe Harbour data privacy agreement, to exclude data protection from any proposed EU-US trade agreement, and to conclude negotiations with the US on introducing judicial redress for EU citizens facing privacy violations. The Edward Snowdon revelations came at a critical time as the EU had already begun a fundamental reassessment of the outdated data protection, Internet and privacy laws. EU citizens need to have control of their personal data, including the right to have their details removed on request. I particularly welcome the recommendation for a European Bill of Rights, as well as increased international protection for journalists and whistle-blowers, the strengthening of cloud computing in the EU, and for increased IT security and encryption standards. Parliament has stood up for citizens’ rights, democracy and the rule of law with this resolution."@en1
