"The EIA Directive is one of the major instruments for environment and health protection. While I am naturally very disappointed that a mandatory EIA for fracking was not included in the compromise text, I believe that the improvements to the Directive concern much more than shale gas. The improvements to the Directive will make EIA more rigorous for all projects to which it applies, including shale gas. These improvements include the independence of experts and avoidance of conflicts of interest; the fact that additional environmental factors must be taken into account such as biodiversity and climate change; an increase in better information and the participation of the public. All of these are crucial to ensuring a strong EU environmental law policy. It is important we think about the overall impact a strong and effective EIA will have on the environment and it would be a shame to forego this opportunity. That is why I voted in favour of the report."@en1
