"I support Parliament’s first reading position on the proposed package travel directive. Tourism plays a central role in the Irish and European economies, accounting for 10[nbsp ]% of EU GDP and employing 1.8[nbsp ]million people, or almost one in twenty workers. The way people arrange their holidays and travel plans has changed enormously since the first Package Travel Directive was adopted in 1990. Europe’s consumer protection laws need to reflect this reality. We need to put in place clear rules regarding liability, price changes and the right to compensation for travel plans composed and booked online. I would urge Member States’ governments to now work with MEPs so that we can reach agreement on this proposal."@en1
