"I support Parliament’s first reading position on the Single European Sky. Over six million commercial flights fly over EU airspace each year and Europe’s airspace is reaching its maximum capacity. Up to 80[nbsp ]% of flight delays are due to insufficient capacity of traffic control systems or problems at airports due to airline operations. Planes are sometimes kept in the air due to lack of coordination. This can disrupt air traffic, inconvenience passengers, increase fuel consumption and increase CO2 emissions. We have removed ground borders between EU countries but we maintain 28 airspaces. We need to reorganise Europe’s airspace in a more efficient way for environmental, economic and safety reasons. I particularly welcome the fact that Parliament has rejected the Commission’s plans to separate and liberalise support services such as meteorology from the core services. The social and organisational cost of such a move would be unpredictable and the benefits questionable. I also welcome the fact that the S&D Group has succeeded in including the social dimension by ensuring that the SES regulation creates new, much needed indicators covering social and staffing conditions."@en1
