"Madam President, I have one minute to summarise two year’s work, so let us not waste time. I will make three positive points and express three reservations. The point that we want one set of rules – a regulation – across the entire European Union makes absolute sense. Any dilution of that would not make sense in an online world that knows no borders. I very much welcome the protection of children in the online world, through permission from their parents or guardians for the processing of their data. The trust of citizens would be increased by explicit consent and by strengthening the right to be forgotten and, as the Commissioner said, the one-stop-shop would certainly be good for business across Europe. My reservations: one, SMEs; two, health research; and three, press freedom. I hope that we can deal with those three issues in a more practical manner, because there is no point talking about the importance of SMEs if we have more regulation, no point talking about the importance of health research if we make it more difficult for them to do that, and also no point talking about press freedom if we inhibit them as well."@en1
