"I am bitterly disappointed that the European Parliament did not adopt a resolution on gender equality across the EU in 2012. It is deeply regrettable that the Members of the European Parliament narrowly voted to reject a report which sought to address the core challenges faced by millions of women across Europe each day, against the backdrop of the economic and social crisis. These crises, and their consequences, call for more gender equality, not less. Deep-rooted inequalities such as the gender pay gap or violence against women need to be addressed at European level through policies that seek to better reconcile work and family life, that give women the chance to enter or return to the labour market and that promote equal pay. By rejecting this report, the European Parliament risks sending the signal that Europe is turning away from women."@en1
