"Prostitution and sexual exploitation is a form of violence against women, an obstacle to equality and an open door for crime. It legalises men buying the sexual abuse of women. I fully support the Nordic legislative model where the purchase of sex is criminalised and the sale of sex is decriminalised. It is based on the idea of demand reduction, that when demand is reduced, through education and the threat of fines, there are fewer incentives for prostitution to exist. Making prostitution less financially lucrative for criminal organisations is a vital arsenal in reducing prostitution. The report highlights the link between prostitution and trafficking and points out that 62% of women trafficked into EU are trafficked for sexual exploitation. Moreover, the report highlights the reality that prostitution is not a profession of choice for the majority of women involved, but that those involved find it difficult to exit in a safe manner. This report highlights the complex legal, health and social issues associated with prostitution. It calls on Member States to provide mechanisms for comprehensive exit strategies out of prostitution."@en1
