"Mr President, I voted in favour of this directive to ensure that all 761[nbsp ]000 websites managed by public sector bodies in the European Union are accessible to everyone, including disabled people and the elderly. Less than 30% of public sector websites meet international web-accessibility standards. I call on the Irish Government to put pressure on the Greek Presidency to prioritise this directive in the Council, which has yet to begin discussions on this directive. This directive would benefit the 167 million citizens of the European Union who have difficulties accessing public websites. The majority of my colleagues and I voted for an amendment which makes the directive more ambitious and would ensure that all public sector websites are accessible; not just those in the 12 categories proposed by the European Commission."@en1
