"Mr[nbsp ]President, today’s positive vote on the report on the accessibility of public sector bodies’ websites is another step towards improving democratic accountability in terms of wider public participation throughout the European Union. The EU has made significant progress on legislation with regard to improving transparency. Thus it is only natural that this should also now be extended to cover the digital sector. The digital market constitutes one of the key pillars in the European Union’s economy, particularly in my country, the UK. Therefore it is important that the public also gain certain rights within the sector. The advent of high-speed broadband and these new initiatives to improve web accessibility are a good thing. It is hoped, particularly as broadband spreads across the 500-million-strong bloc of the 28 Member States, that the EU and all its citizens will be able to make the most of this new digital age that has contributed to so many positive changes in all areas of public life, including e-government. I was happy to endorse the report."@en1
