"Mr President, I think all of us in this Chamber obviously support improving road safety measures and we wish to promote more cross-border cooperation between Member States’ police and emergency services.
The roads in the UK are consistently amongst the safest in the world, but there is always room for improvement. However, we do not support the mandatory deployment of the eCall system. There are still serious questions that must be answered regarding the cost of implementation and the technical infrastructure. A recent study indicated that the mandatory deployment of eCall, in the UK alone, would cost approximately GBP 300 million a year. There is also no mention of the additional costs and burdens that would be imposed on the car industry and, of course, on the public, who may not actually want this tracker device in their car.
In addition, there are serious issues that have been raised regarding data protection and which have been identified by colleagues in the Chamber. We must take that on board. From our point of view, we certainly support a continued voluntary approach in this area. We believe that passengers should have the choice about what they want, and we believe that the right way forward is to improve safety on our roads by also enforcing other things that we can do, and which have been raised in this Chamber."@en1
