"I supported today’s vote to maintain EUR[nbsp ]3.5 billion for the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD). Thanks to Parliament we will not see the EUR[nbsp ]1 billion cut that Member States, like the UK, wanted to achieve. With around 24[nbsp ]% of the EU’s population at risk of poverty or social exclusion it is clear that action needs to be taken. The EU, in its 2020 Strategy has set a target to lift 20[nbsp ]million people out of poverty and social exclusion by 2020. FEAD is an important tool we need to use if the EU is to achieve these aims. The Fund will provide funding for food banks across the EU, as well as material goods such as shoes for children. The scope has also been broadened to include spending on social inclusion measures. I am disappointed that the UK Government did everything they could to fight against this Fund and that they are only going to draw on the minimum resources available to them. I am further disheartened to see that UK Tory MEPs voted against this legislation; this once again demonstrates how out of touch they are and how little they want to help those most in need."@en1
