"The automotive industry accounts for around 11% of all UK exports. As one of the world’s largest vehicle producers, the 4 largest in the EU, the industry is extremely important to growth and jobs in Britain. 2013 saw nearly 1.5 million vehicles leave the production line, representing a 5% increase on the number in 2012. With this in mind, the importance of this report for the UK cannot be understated. I am pleased, therefore, that the report has worked within the parameters of technological and economic realities, approaching the issue with a general sense of pragmatism. This is highlighted in a number of areas, whether it is the exemption for niche manufacturers that produce less than 1[nbsp ]000 vehicles per annum; the phasing-in of the target over one year; or the ‘super-credits’ regime that allows manufacturers to benefit from the production of ultra-low polluting cars that go beyond the minimum targets. Finally, in noting my vote in favour of the report, I would like to welcome the restraint exhibited in not setting any indicative or binding targets for CO2 emissions that extend beyond 2020."@en1
