"I would urge Bosnia and Herzegovina’s political representatives to seek to put internal difficulties aside and to start the process of constitutional reforms aimed at simplifying the complex political architecture deriving from the Dayton agreement. The impasse following the Sejdić-Finci ruling, with its significant implications for minority rights, needs to be overcome if we are to see free and fair elections in October 2014. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s citizens are becoming increasingly impatient with the lack of economic development, which has dire social consequences, and the lack of a clear vision for the future. Over recent weeks public frustration has been expressed in daily protests involving thousands of people across the country. Bosnia and Herzegovina is standing still while other countries in the region are moving forward and moving towards EU accession. I want to see Bosnia and Herzegovina joining the EU, if that is the citizens’ wish, but the country’s political leaders needs to take the right steps if it is to move towards such a decision. The EU must deepen its engagement with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the current tensions must be resolved as quickly as possible, otherwise there is a real risk of wider instability in the region."@en1
