"The year 2012 saw the biggest episode of food fraud to hit Britain in the past century. Tens of millions of tonnes of meat-based products were withdrawn from supermarkets throughout Europe.
However, British people are still waiting to discover how horsemeat was so widely incorporated into their food chain. The difficulties of unpicking complex meat supply chains to discover at what point mislabelling was introduced have meant that prosecutions for this crime have been extremely difficult. To combat that appalling lack of accountability I voted in favour of mandatory labelling indicating the place of birth and slaughter for all meat.
I believe that consumers should be told where an animal was reared and how far it has travelled, the animal-welfare standards of the countries it has passed through, and the time and place of slaughter. These standards have not been met by the Commission or by many Member States, and that is not acceptable to consumers. I hope today’s vote will be a move towards restoring trust in the food sector, and towards better standards of meat production in Europe."@en1
