"Mr President, I think Commissioner Füle and the rapporteur, Mrs Pack, have fully brought out how our complaints about the fact that Bosnia has hardly moved on in five years are having a real effect in the real economy. The failure to agree the identity card law has meant that babies could not get personal numbers, could not get passports, and a baby could not go to Germany for medical treatment. Bosnia has lost millions of euros in pre-accession grants because of a failure to set up the EU coordination mechanism. Dairy and meat exports to the EU cannot happen because of the failure to agree to veterinary and sanitary inspections. So, with a weak legal system, corruption, organised crime and money laundering not tackled, it is no wonder that unemployment is 45% and there is very little direct foreign investment. These are real impacts that are being felt. Like everybody else, I very much welcome the young people in the gallery, because one hopes for a Bosnian Spring, as it were. I mean, you have got to challenge – if I may be slightly rude and say – the bunch of old men running your country. You have got to call them to account. I was one of those who was very pleased to support Tanja Fajon in pushing for visa-free travel from Bosnia to the Schengen Area – unfortunately not to the UK. We want you to have your horizons raised, to get inspiration from the rest of Europe, to invigorate and inspire Bosnian civil society, and to really push your institutions, your governments and your elected representatives to change your country, so that you will sooner rather than later..."@en1
