"Madam President, because of the Lisbon Treaty – which the people of Ireland finally approved in a second referendum that subsequently came into force on 1 December 2009 – this Parliament, a directly elected body, has far more say and far more power. Thanks to Lisbon there has been a redistribution of powers away from the faceless bureaucrats and this will, I think, benefit Europe in the long-term. Now, an alignment of EU legislation is needed, and this report provides precisely for that. I therefore welcome it. We as a Parliament have a responsibility to our fishermen to ensure that the rules of the common fisheries policy are complied with fairly, right across the European Union and that, whenever difficulties with implementation occur, they are addressed. For far too long, and particularly in my country, in the island of Ireland on the edge of the Atlantic, fishermen have been put at a disadvantage by past instances of non-uniform implementation of the common fisheries policy. This report is a step in the right direction. Hopefully it will mean a much better deal for our fishermen, particularly on the western seaboard."@en1
