"Madam President, unlike my colleagues who have just spoken, I recommended that we vote against this report.
This has taken just over five years. I am Vice-Chair of the Committee on International Trade; I voted in the Committee; and I would say to Mr Higgins that, in fact, there was no consensus in the Committee, so he is wrong there. To Ms Angelilli, who referred to the need to ‘protect our markets’, I would point out that we live in a global economy where goods are traded around the world. If we are not careful, we will end up as a Dickensian society. There is sufficient legislation in place: the Commission already has the powers to implement anti-dumping legislation where products are sold in the EU at less than the cost of production or less than their cost in the country from which they come. Protectionism only ends up destroying the industries we are trying to protect.
I would like to make one last point. We are in serious negotiations with countries like the United States, and we have negotiated with a number of others, so I would leave you with this thought: I wonder what they think. Does this send a good signal? Europe is protecting itself against everything."@en1
