"I welcome the adoption of the new directive on seasonal workers, the first adopted using the EU’s post-Lisbon role in legal migration. This directive harmonises the conditions of entry and residence of migrant workers entering the EU for seasonal work. Member States remain responsible for deciding the numbers entering. While the text does not go far enough in some areas, I believe that a good compromise has been reached. This is the first piece of EU legislation aimed at protecting low-skilled/low-paid employment from exploitation. It guarantees the right of all third-country national seasonal workers to adequate accommodation, to extend their stay with the same employer and/or to change employer at least once during their stay, and to compensation when a seasonal worker has their authorisation withdrawn due to actions of the employer. While Ireland does not currently operate a dedicated scheme for the admission of third-country nationals for the purposes of seasonal work and has not opted in to this legislation, I would urge the Irish government to give serious consideration to opting in to this directive at a future date."@en1
