"Madam President, I choose to support this report, although Ireland does not currently operate a dedicated scheme for the admission of third-country nationals for the purpose of seasonal work. Indeed, neither Ireland nor the United Kingdom exercised their option to participate in the measure pre its adoption, although it is open to both countries to do so once the measure has been adopted.
The purpose of the proposal is excellent. It is to introduce a special procedure for third-country nationals applying to reside in the European Union for seasonal employment and to define the rights of seasonal workers. It is very important that these rights of seasonal workers are protected right across the EU. The measure establishes a fast-track procedure for admission – a maximum of 90 days, for example – based on a common definition and common criteria: in other words, a work contract or binding job offer. The text also covers re-entry of a seasonal worker in a subsequent season, the protection of the worker’s safety and health and the working conditions and duties of the employer, for example accommodation and change. All of this has to be respected, so I believe this is an excellent measure."@en1
