"Mr President, faced with the behaviour displayed by some airlines often conveyed to me by many constituents in Ireland, this review of EU air passenger rights legislation is most timely. Too often airlines fail to offer passengers the assistance that current EU legislation binds them to, exploiting the gaps in enforcement by national enforcement bodies and exploiting passengers’ lack of knowledge of their rights over issues of legal interpretation.
The number of high-profile EU court cases brought over these rules clearly demonstrates the need to tighten our rules and clarify the definition of extraordinary circumstances beyond the air carrier’s control. Compensation for long delays is explicitly introduced on foot of the retrospective ECG court ruling and will have simpler trigger points for assistance. I look forward to seeing the legislation in place."@en1
