"UK Conservatives believe that restoring the competitiveness of Europe’s steel industry will be a crucial component of our wider economic recovery. We were particularly pleased to see a focus on research and innovation in the committee report and also the acknowledgement that EU climate and energy policies have led to an increase in energy prices throughout Europe. While we voted in favour of this report we were unhappy that calls for the EU to follow a more protectionist approach to trade agreements were adopted; instead we would prefer to see a progressive liberalisation of foreign markets. Additionally, we believe that national and regional authorities are better placed than the EU to address local restructuring and retraining needs that arise as a result of industries closing or relocating."@en1
